10 evergreen Bollywood songs that have reference to flowers

If there is a romantic poem, or even a romantic story, rarely it happens that there is no reference to a flower. Whether the person speaking or describing talks about flowers growing in the wilderness, in an enchanting garden, or from a flower shop, some way or the other, flowers are brought up continuously. What would Bollywood be without songs of eternal romance and gripping emotions, and how can songs manifest without poetry, and when it comes to poetry, the Bollywood songs are not immune to copiously bringing up flowers.
In this post we are listing 10 evergreen Bollywood songs that either talk about flowers themselves, or equate the lover of the fairer sex to some sort of flower.

1. Ae phoolon ki raani, baharon ki malika, tera muskurana ghazab ho gaya

Filmed on the Jubilee star Rajendra Kumar, the opening verses of the song compare the lady love, Sadhna, to the Queen of flowers and the Empress of the spring season. The song is mellifluously sung by Mohammad Rafi in the film Arzoo that was released in 1965.
The stanza carrying the reference to flowers, goes like this:

Ae phoolon ki rani
Baharon ki malika
Tera muskurana
Ghazab ho gaya
Na hum hosh mein hain
Na tum hosh mein ho
Nazar ka milana
Ghazab ho gaya

The rough translation of the song is...

O queen of flowers
O empress of the spring
Your smile is wreaking havoc
Neither am I in my senses
Nor you are in your senses
The meeting of our eyes is wreaking havoc

2. Phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein

This one is from the movie Saraswati Chandra, crooned by the melancholic but romantic voice of Mukesh and the heavenly voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The recipient of this romantic serenade is the enchanting Nutan. The protagonist is relatively an unknown actor named Manish, though, the song is one of the most famous Bollywood songs. The reference to the flower – phool – comes in the mukhda (the opening lines)..

Phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein
Phool nahi mera dil hai
Priyatam mere, mujhko likha
Kya ye tumhare kabil hai

The rough translation of the song is...

I am enclosing a flower in the letter I’m sending to you
But don’t consider it as a flower, it is my heart
My darling, please do write back to me to tell
Is my heart deserving of your love?

They too will have something to complain about

4. Jab jab bahar ayi aur phool muskuraye

Very touching theme song that keeps on appearing in a family drama named Taqdeer in which Bharatbhushan as father repeatedly sings this song to his kids. Whether they are together or they are separated by the crashing waves of destiny, this song keeps them together, keeps on connected with each other. The song is sung by an assortment of singers including Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and a few kids. Here is the flower part..

Jab jab bahar ayi
Aur phool muskuraye
Mujhe tum yaad aaye
Mujhe tum yaad aaye
Jab jab bhi chaand nikla
Aur tare jagmagaye
Mujhe tum yaad aye
Mujhe tum yaad aye

In case you don’t understand Hindi, this is what it means in English...

Whenever the spring came
Whenever the flowers blossomed
They reminded me of you
They reminded me of you
Whenever the moon shown in the sky
Whenever the stars twinkled
They reminded me of you
They reminded me of you

5. Likkhe jo khat tujhe, wo teri yaad mein

The "phool" part comes a bit later, but definitely in the beginning lines. This is a melodious romantic song from the movie Kanyadan, filmed on the charming Shashi Kapoor and the coy (at least in the song sequence) Asha Parekh. It goes like this..

Likkhe jo khat tujhe
Wo teri yaad mein
Hazaron rang ke
Nazaare ban gaye
Savera jab hua
To phool ban gaye
Jo raat ayi to
Sitaare ban gaye
Likkhe jo khat tujhe

In English...

All the letters I wrote to you
Lost in your memories
Turned into panoramas of thousand colours
In the morning they turned into flowers
At night they turned into stars
All the letters I wrote to you

8. Phoolon ke dere hain

Amitabh Bacchan, in his prime, and like many heroes of the seventies, randomly waving the quintessential guitar and walking among flower beds, sings this song, coming from somewhere, going somewhere. The background singer is but of course none other than Kishor Kumar and the movie is Zameer – one of the first films that made Amitabh Bachchan a superstar. Running among flowers, occasionally strumming the strings of his guitar, he sings..

Phoolon ke dere hain
Saaye ghanere hain
Jhoom rahi hain hawaen
Aise nazaaron mein
Khilti bahaaron mein
Pyaar mile to rook jaaen

The English translation is like this...

The flowers have made this place their abode
Dark and cool are the shadows here
The gusts of air are dancing
Amidst this scenic beauty
With spring blossoming everywhere
I can consider staying on
If I find my love here

9. Phoolon ke rang se, dil ki kalam se

The evergreen romantic song that creates flutters in every heart. This song is sung by Kishor Kumar and it is featured on Dev Anand in the movie Prem Pujari. The opening lines of the song go like this..

Phoolon ke rang se
Dil ki kalam se
Tujhko likhi roz baati
Kaise bataun
Ki skis tarhan se
Pal pal mujhe tu satati
Tere hi sapne
Lekar ke soya
Teri hi yaadon me jaaga
Tere khayalon me
Uljha raha yun
Jaise ke maala me dhaga
Ooo…badal Bijli Chandan paani jaisa apna pyaar
Lena hoga janam hume kayi kayi baar

In English...

With the colour of flowers
With the quill of my heart
I wrote to you everyday
I just can’t tell you
How every moment
You torment me
I slept with your dreams
I woke up with your memories
I was perpetually trapped in your thoughts
The way a string is trapped in a necklace of pearls
Our love is like the cloud and the thunder
Like the sandalwood and water
To fulfil our love
We will have to take birth multiple times

10. Baharo phool barsao mera mehboob aaya hai

Sort of a majestic song with Rajendra Kumar and Vaijyanti Mala wearing totally opposite but traditional clothes, an elephant waving its trunk and shaking the branches of a tree to shower the heroine with flowers, and a swing totally seems to be made of flowers. Mohammed Rafi has rendered his magical voice to this song from the film Suraj. The first few lines of the song go like this..

Baharo phool barsao
Mera mehboob aaya hai
Mera mehboob aaya hai
Hawao raagini gao
Mera mehboob aaya hai
Mera mehboob aaya hai

In English...

O blooms of spring
Make it rain flowers
Because my beloved has come
Because my beloved has come
Sing a song you eddies of air
Because my beloved has come
Because my beloved has come
