Why is Valentine's Day celebrated with flowers?

Come Valentine's Day and you see people of all ages, sizes and dimensions carrying flowers, especially roses. Everybody is either carrying a bunch of flowers because he or she has been gifted flowers by someone, or he or she is on his or her way to gift flowers to someone.

There is such a mad rush for giving and sending flowers on Valentine's Day that it sometimes becomes near to impossible to get flowers on this day, as most of the good flowers have been sold even by late afternoon.

So, why is Valentine's Day celebrated with flowers? Why do people want to give flowers, and why do they feel sad and dejected if they don't receive flowers on this day.

The history of celebrating Valentine's Day with flowers

The story of Valentine's Day is romantic as well as tragic.

Emperors and dictators are known for taking random and whimsical decisions and many such decisions become cause for misery needlessly.

In the 3rd Century, the Roman Emperor Claudius II concluded that single men made better soldiers and romantic relationships must better be avoided. He outlawed marriage of young men. They couldn't marry, and they couldn't fall in love, and whoever disobeyed the order, was either put to death or incarcerated for life.

You must be wondering what has it got to do with celebrating Valentine's Day with flowers?

The flowerpot comes later.

There was a young priest named Valentine and he was totally opposed to the idea of young men not being allowed to marry. He performed many marriages secretly, and eventually he was caught and sentenced to death.

In jail, while waiting for his death sentence, he fell in love with the jailor’s daughter. Just when he was about to be put to death, he sent a love letter to the girl and signed it, “From your Valentine,” and hence, got the expression immortalized.

Valentine was executed on February 14, 270 AD.

In the ensuing couple of centuries, he was anointed as a revered saint and in 496 AD, Pope Gelasius kicked off the tradition of honouring Saint Valentine on 14 February as a day dedicated to love.

Flowers came into the picture much later, at least on a grander scale.

All over the world flowers are considered as a sign of fertility and health. The harvest time is just around the corner, spring is slowly nudging away the winter and flowers can be seen everywhere. Hence, flowers became a natural choice for expressing love and rejuvenation

When was the tradition of sending and receiving flowers on Valentine’s Day started formally?

Formally, the tradition of sending and receiving flowers on Valentine’s Day started in the 18th century. It was started by Charles II of Sweden. A unique meaning was attached to every flower and people claim that an entire message could be conveyed by combining different flowers sequentially into a bouquet. This evolved into a language called “Floriography”.

Although different flowers are given for different reasons on Valentine’s Day, the roses are strongly associated with romantic love for their sturdiness and deep red colour
